Rise and Fall of Silver Islet
Rise and Fall of Silver Islet
This is my second professional documentary film which I sold to CBC. It tells the story of a tiny island off Lake Superior's North Shore that was a 19th century engineering milestone. A 1300 foot deep silver mine once operated on storm-battered Silver Islet. The film was shot in 1985 in an old mine in Cobalt, Ontario and at the Steam Pump house museum when it used to operate in Kingston Ontario. The film was shot with a tiny budget on my old 16mm Bolex Camera. It is 25 minutes long. Produced and Directed by Peter G. Elliott. Written by Robert Sandler. Instrumental music score by Cathy Elliott and Roger Cormier. The title song was composed and sung by Bill Houston from Thunder Bay. Many of my friends are playing miners in this. This presentation is dedicated to my friend Scott Hoey who narrated it in his Rod Serling style. Scott passed away in 2009.

Proctor, On a Distant Shore
Proctor, On a Distant Shore
Nestled in the Appalachians in Western North Carolina the town of Proctor was a thriving community a hundred years ago. The community of over 1000 was a bustling lumber town with streets lined with fine Victorian homes. There was a school, a community center, a theater, a train depot, a church, an ice cream shop, and a club house all built around one of the largest lumber mills in the region. When it was first established in 1886, Proctor was little more than a post office that served the farms in the Hazel Creek community, some of which had been there over 50 years. Proctor's isolation ended in 1907 when the Southern Railway finally arrived at the mouth of Hazel Creek. A few years later the Ritter Lumber Company built a large sawmill in the area and the boom was on. But Appalachian timber only lasted a fleeting moment and less than 20 years later with no more virgin stands in the area to harvest, the Ritter Company packed up and left in 1928 carrying all of the jobs with it. Once again Proctor was a small farming community. World War II threw the United States into turmoil and the communities of Hazel Creek and the Little Tennessee River found themselves right smack in the middle of it. The US needed aluminum and steel and large mining and refining operations required lots of electricity. To fill the demand the Tennessee Valley Authority drew up plans to build then largest concrete damn in the Eastern United States. TVA purchased or laid claim to over 68000 acres. Over 2 ...

REMARKS BY THE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS & INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION, HON RATU INOKE KUBUABOLA ON THE OCCASION OF THE VISIT OF KOREAN RESEARCH VESSEL "ARAON", TUESDAY 26TH APRIL 2011 Your Excellency Ambassador Cheong Hae-wook Captain Jong Ryul KIM of the Research Vessel Araon, Scientists and Crew on board the Vessel, Distinguished Guests Ladies and Gentleman Allow me to first of all acknowledge the kind words of welcome from His Excellency Ambassador Cheong Hae-wook. To Captain KIM, the Scientists and Crew of the Vessel "Araon", I say on behalf of all of us: BULA, NAMASTE, HWANGYONG-HAMNIDA AND WELCOME TO FIJI! The vessel "Araon" is visiting us today after conducting research and deep sea survey in Tonga for the last one and half month. I understand the vessel is now on its way back to its homeport in Korea and should be returning later in the year to conduct research and deep sea survey in Fiji if all goes according to plan. The potential for seabed mining in the Pacific Island region is significant. The Cook Islands EEZ, for example, is believed to contain some 7.5 million metric tons of manganese nodules, a potential source of 32 million metric tons of cobalt, or 520 years of supply at current world demand. Cobalt-rich manganese crusts deposits have been found in the Federal States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. Polymetallic sulphide deposits have been discovered in the Lau Basin in Fiji and Tonga's EEZ, and in the Manus and Woodlark Basins in Papua New ...

The Phoenicians played a significant role in Nation building such as Carthage. Understanding the Phoenician trade routes allows one to investigate where many of the 10 tribes ultimately migrated to. Within this area we have the land of none other than Israel! It was during the Kingdom of David and Solomon(1000 -700 BC) that the 12 tribe'd Nation took full Advantage of the Phoenician's Advanced Navies and one of the most strategic gates in the world called the "Gate of Gibraltar". Phoenicians were now Thrust into the National Spotlight and Israel was poised to reap the global trade dominance. They are not aggressive by any means; however, if you were to hit one with a reed of sugar cane for example, the others will attack. To prevent such aggression I funnel them out of my room, one by one, so that only one subject remains. This allows me to carry out my tests in peace. Upon death pigmen spray cooked pork chops into the air. A marvellous and extremely convenient event I must say! I have found myself becoming quite partial to this savoury taste and relish the thought of more. The pigmen do not respect any of the crude items in our dimension. Note 13: Day 340 Alone. Mountain Bike Nevada Day 5 & 6 - Great Basin Bicycles Reno Nevada - Mountain Bike Trails
Mountain Bike Nevada is a Mountain Bike ride across the state of Nevada from Cal-Neva Hotel & Casino on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada. The 11 day mountain bike ride starts there, and ends on the Utah - Nevada State Line in Border Town on Highway 50. 11 Days 533 miles 38000 ft of climbing. This video is day 5 and 6 Day 5 started in Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park Nv, and finished in the south end of Big Smokey Valley in the town of Carvers Nevada Day 6 started outside Carvers, NV. and we climbed up the Toiabe Mountain Range, up Ophir Grade, and climbs up over 10100 ft. Then descends through the ghost mining town of Ophir. There used to be over 2000 people that lived there. At 2:40 you will see a creek crossing. If you can go frame by frame, you can see that Jami's wheel bow wave pushes a small brook trout out of the water. I stopped to throw the little guy back in the water. Once at the bottom, the final clip is Diana's Punch Bowl. It is a Hydrothermal vent surrounded by a Tufa formation in the valley floor that is 40 - 40 feet deep, with water that will hard boil an egg in just a couple of minutes. I will have about 5 or 6 videos to connect the state from end to end. So, this is 3 of 5 or 6. Lake Peigneur sinkhole disaster
Lake Peigneur sinkhole disaster
On 20 November, 1980, when the disaster took place, the Diamond Crystal Salt Company operated the Jefferson Island salt mine under the lake, while a Texaco oil rig drilled down from the surface of the lake searching for petroleum. Due to a miscalculation, the 14-inch (36 cm) drill bit entered the mine, starting a chain of events which at the time turned an almost 10-foot (3.0 m) deep freshwater lake into a salt water lake with a deep hole. It is difficult to determine exactly what occurred, as all of the evidence was destroyed or washed away in the ensuing maelstrom. One explanation is that a miscalculation by Texaco regarding their location resulted in the drill puncturing the roof of the third level of the mine. This created an opening in the bottom of the lake. The lake then drained into the hole, expanding the size of that hole as the soil and salt were washed into the mine by the rushing water, filling the enormous caverns left by the removal of salt over the years. The resultant whirlpool sucked in the drilling platform, eleven barges, many trees and 65 acres (260000 m2) of the surrounding terrain. So much water drained into those caverns that the flow of the Delcambre Canal that usually empties the lake into Vermilion Bay was reversed, making the canal a temporary inlet. This backflow created, for a few days, the tallest waterfall ever in the state of Louisiana, at 164 feet (50 m), as the lake refilled with salt water from the Delcambre Canal and Vermilion Bay. Complete lyrics: Far over the Misty Mountains cold, To dungeons deep and caverns old, We must away, ere break of day, To seek our pale enchanted gold. The dwarves of yore made mighty spells, While hammers fell like ringing bells, In places deep, where dark things sleep, In hollow halls beneath the fells. For ancient king and elvish lord There many a gleaming golden hoard They shaped and wrought, and light they caught, To hide in gems on hilt of sword. On silver necklaces they strung The flowering stars, on crowns they hung The dragon-fire, on twisted wire They meshed the light of moon and sun. Far over the Misty Mountains cold, To dungeons deep and caverns old, We must away, ere break of day, To claim our long-forgotten gold. Goblets they carved there for themselves, And harps of gold, where no man delves There lay they long, and many a song Was sung unheard by men or elves. The pines were roaring on the heights, The wind was moaning in the night, The fire was red, it flaming spread, The trees like torches blazed with light. The bells were ringing in the dale, And men looked up with faces pale. The dragon's ire, more fierce than fire, Laid ...

Kawah Ijen by night - John Lennon
Photographer Olivier Grunewald has recently made several trips into the sulfur mine in the crater of the Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia, bringing with him equipment to capture surreal images lit by moonlight, torches, and the blue flames of burning molten sulfur. Covered last year in the Big Picture (in daylight), the miners of the 2600 meter tall (8660ft) Kawah Ijen volcano trek up to the crater, then down to the shore of a 200-meter-deep crater lake of sulfuric acid, where they retrieve heavy chunks of pure sulfur to carry back to a weighing station. 1/19/2011 - Heated meeting on Chuitna Mine proposal www.ktuu.com (Excerpt) The Department of Natural Resources will makes its decision in 60 days. Online comments are also being taken. DNR is considering adding another public comment period because of the bad weather. 1/12/2011 - homernews.com (Excerpt) Common sense and considerable scientific data should prompt decision-makers to say, what is there to discuss? Who would want to ruin a very productive spawning process that feeds the critical salmon industry in the northern Cook Inlet? It seems that both state and local decision-makers do. Hope remains that the result of the Jan. 19th hearing will be that the decision-makers will review the overwhelming data showing the Chuitna basin unsuitable for coal mining and reject Pac Rim sending them back to Texas. Thus far in the process there has been little to be optimistic about. Is there anyone out there? Sea Coal - UK
July 2006 Joe Smith, now in his 70s, is one of the last remaining sea coal collectors in England. Working down the shore from the mines, he collects coal washed up by the sea. "It's a beautiful job. It keeps you healthy", states Joe. In its heyday, hundreds of other people worked alongside him, collecting an average of 2000 tons of a coal every weekend. But since the mines have closed and demand for coal fallen, the others have slowly disappeared. "Now it's just old codgers like us."

Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, a designation shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. The WP&YR railway was considered an impossible task but it was literally blasted through coastal mountains in only 26 months. The $10 million project was the product of British financing, American engineering and Canadian contracting. Tens of thousands of men and 450 tons of explosives overcame harsh and challenging climate and geography to create "the railway built of gold." The WP&YR climbs almost 3000 feet in just 20 miles and features steep grades of up to 3.9%, cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, two tunnels and numerous bridges and trestles. The steel cantilever bridge was the tallest of its kind in the world when it was constructed in 1901. The 110 mile WP&YR Railroad was completed with the driving of the golden spike on July 29, 1900 in Carcross Yukon connecting the deep water port of Skagway Alaska to Whitehorse Yukon and beyond to northwest Canada and interior Alaska. The WP&YR suspended operations in 1982 when Yukon's mining industry collapsed due to low mineral prices. The railway was reopened in 1988 as a seasonal tourism operation and served 37000 passengers. Today, the WP&YR is Alaska's most popular shore excursion carrying over 360000 passengers during the 2010 May to September tourism season operating on the first 67.5 miles (Skagway, Alaska ...

Oil & Gas Exploration in Minnesota
Oil & Gas Exploration in Minnesota
The colored maps in my slide show were generated by fly-overs in of an airplane equipped with a very sensitive machine able to detect very small changes in magnetic fields of bedrock 1000's of feet deep. Changes in color on the map indicate a change in the type of rock present deep below the surface. The near surface geology has largely been examined in Minnesota with state geologists taking core samples from both public and private water wells as they were drilled over the years. The deep geology of Minnesota has largely been unknown because of the expense of drilling deep wells for exploration. Until the Aeromagnetic maps were generated for the Midwest, the deep geology of the Midwest was far less certain. The red band that runs from Kansas through Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan is where the North American continent started to split apart 1.1 billion years ago. The red band running through the Aeromagnetic Map is what is left of a 1.1 billion year old mountain range. The Twin Cities area sits over the base of this mountain range that long ago weathered away to flat, and then as the Mid-continent drooped, it caused even more sediments from two addition inland seas at about 500 and 400 million years ago to deposit on top of the original sediments. A volcanic chain of islands ran through Minnesota at 1.1 billion years ago. These chain of volcanic islands were surrounded by water filled trough areas adjacent to their shorelines that served as collection basins for silt, mud ...
